Information SkillsMission: "The mission of the library media program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information." --Information Power: Guidelines for School Library Media Programs (1988), p.1

To make the Cornelius Elementary program successful at achieving this mission, I implement a scaffolded approach to instruction, using the North Carolina Essential Standards for Information and Technology Skills 
as a framework. All students are engaged with technology during class. They use iPads and Chromebooks as a tool toward learning the standards below.

Kindergarten:
  • Identify relevant sources of information for a given task.
  • Differentiate between fiction and nonfiction.
  • Use technology to gather, organize and present information and data.
  • Develop relevant questions for a given purpose.
  • Understand the importance of respect for the work of others (Copyright).

First Grade: 
  • Classify resources as relevant or not relevant for a given task.
  • Classify text as fiction or nonfiction.
  • Compare important facts and minor details.
  • Use a variety of technology tools to gather, organize and present data and information.
  • Recognize the steps of a simple research process. (Super 3 research model: Plan, Do, Review)
  • Explain why safety is important when using the Internet.

Second Grade: 
  • Classify resources as current or not current.
  • Categorize books by their genre characteristics.
  • Summarize appropriate reading strategies when reading for information.
  • Use a variety of technology tools to gather, organize and present data and information.
  • Execute the steps of a simple research process. (Super 3 research model: Plan, Do, Review)
  • Use simple citation rules for print and electronic resources.

Third Grade: 
  • Classify resources as reliable or not reliable.
  • Use visual and literacy cues to locate relevant information in a given text.
  • Use a variety of technology tools to gather, organize and present data and information.
  • Super 3 research model and introduction to Big6
  • Understand ethical behavior when using resources.
  • Understand Internet safety precautions.
  • Implement a research process by collaborating effectively with other students.

Fourth Grade: 
  • Use a variety of relevant and reliable sources to gather information.
  • Implement a research process by collaborating effectively with other students.
  • Explain the importance of relevant characteristics in various genres.
  • Understand the guidelines for responsible use of technology hardware.
  • Understand ethical behavior when using resources.

Fifth grade: 
  • Differentiate strategies when reading informational text in a variety of formats.
  • Understand Internet safety precautions.
